BOOKS FOR SCHOOLS
Schools across Malawi struggle with being under resourced in every way. This problem extends to insufficient learning materials which is a problem we frequently encounter on our volunteer teaching placements. Volunteers often rely on materials they have brought with them as teaching aids. The Books for Schools project aims to address this insufficiency of resources by providing the materials needed to make the students’ education a success.

Background
In primary schools the curriculum is taught from books for each year group, this includes a teacher’s book and a learner’s book. In order to teach the curriculum and learners to be able to follow the work and complete exercises in the books, there needs to be a sufficient number available. Unfortunately there are rarely enough books for even one between 5, thus children lose interest or are unable to follow classes properly. We want to help to address this problem by giving more access to books to improve the success of lessons for both students and teachers.
How the Book for Schools project helps
Many schools are not even equipped with a library and learners have no access to books outside of school time. As part of our project, we have raised money to install libraries at two local primary schools and a secondary school. We now need to make sure that these are as effective as possible by equipping them with books that students will have access to outside of school time and that will be a valuable learning resource in aiding students’ studies. At secondary school this is particularly important as books that cover the range of complex topics covered are less easily available but are invaluable in changing the success rates of the students’ results.

Donations
Donations to this project cover the costs of new and varied books that the students have access to. This new resource is vital to the success of their education. Money also goes towards the upkeep of the library and the installation of new libraries in the future.
