Project Description

As part of our medical projects we teach members of our Home Based Care teams the skills of basic wound care. Many people are benefitting from this in the remote areas in which we work where access to free healthcare is difficult and expensive. Wounds are now being properly cleaned and dressed, preventing infection and improving healing rates.

We started doing this with a bag full of supplies, a mat and volunteers. We were able to teach the basics but without suitable shelter this presented problems when trying to achieve optimal hygiene when doing practical care. Our first success in this area was raising money to renovate a room in Nkope community building to accommodate patients. Shelves for keeping supplies were installed and proper benches installed for treating patients.

The other village we work in is not lucky enough to have a community building so until recently we have been doing our work on a mat outside under the shade of a baobab tree. We have been facing the same problems of dusty conditions but have been managing. It is now approaching rainy season which is highly disruptive to sessions and makes it impossible for us to carry out our work. This year we have been lucky enough to raise funds for a shelter so we can continue our work uninterrupted! The work is almost completed and we look forward to making the most of it!
